18 January 2018 | AI in Finance Workshop: Opportunities and Governance - Learn Through Making Your First Chatbot! Artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics offers much hype and tantalizing opportunities for incumbent and challenge financial institutions (FI). Application scenarios are ranging from user-interfaces such as chatbots and facial and voice recognition biometrics, to analytics and automation with the objective to derive insights on and address the needs of customers (retail and institutional), markets and regulators.
AI enables new business models and ways of doing business such as optimized credit analysis, micro-insurance, customer support, document review, monitoring and reporting (RegTech). Yet, the use of AI also raises concerns regarding fairness, accountability and transparency. For example, are FI board members and senior management confident that AI systems being introduced are not biased? Would they be able to adequately explain how such AI systems work to regulators? This practical “hands on” and interactive workshop empowers FI board members and senior managers of FIs (whether from business units, Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC) or IT functions) to better understand AI as it applies to their companies and industry. Also, and more importantly, it enables them to make better decisions in relation to selection, adoption and governance of such technologies. Our key approach is for participants to learn by doing, and so they will make their first chatbot during the workshop, which will enable them to understand the potential and issues that arise from use of machine learning to help them think about governance issues in their own institutions. A workshop will be held in each of the morning and afternoon, specifically developed for board members and senior management of FIs, and strictly limited in number of participants to maximize meaningful exchange and sharing. The workshop facilitator will be ACMI’s managing director Brian Tang, who is on IIIE’s Global AI Ethics Initiative Policy Committee and who curated the AI in Finance: Make Your First Chatbot programme as part of the Hong Kong Fintech Education Week held with City University Apps Lab and HSBC Applied Innovation’s Juergen H Rahmel. Brian has previously contributed a chapter to The FinTech Book on online capital marketplaces (which was featured in Forbes) and is co-chair of Fintech Association of Hong Kong RegTech Committee. The upcoming The RegTech Book features a chapter by Brian on AI governance and is due to be published in early 2018. Participants should bring their own laptops to learn to make their chatbot, and will receive Certificates of Completion.

The number of newly listed companies has declined, and alternative markets such as AIM and GEM have not been too successful in attracting new economy (innovative) listings. In this seminar, speakers would share their insights and discuss on how governance could support growth and innovation through attracting innovative company listings.
